Blog # 1

Hello and welcome to our seminar!

Please take a moment and write 1 paragraph detailing how you expect contemporary literature to differ from some of the more canonical texts we will be reading.  As always, be specific!

Due: Sunday, 8.28

  1. I am not too familiar with contemporary literature, but through my knowledge of the two, contemporary literature tend to have a faster, more dynamic plot line. Two of the books I have read over the summer are Austen's Pride and Prejudice, and Murakami's Kafka On the Shore. Though I personally prefer Austen's book, Murakami's book definitely had a more 'exciting' taste to it, whereas Austen's was more descriptive and narration based.

  2. Contemporary literature differs from the more canonical texts since contemporary literature tend to question the beliefs that we ordinary have.Well, it does not really question the believfs we have, but it actually goes beyond the things we think that are "ordinary" or "usual". It has a different kind of writing than the normal texts we read. For example it has many different narratives and has different plots and story lines (in one book).

  3. I think that contemporary literature has more of an unpredictable storyline than more canonical writing. Contemporary literature also shows some kind of gamble/experiment that the author is making by writing things unusual rather than sticking to the safe side and writing things the reader would expect. Contemporary literature defies the rules of the world or the codes in which we live by. Murakami's novel, 'the Wind-up Bird' is also a contemporary novel and can be described as weird. However, it can also be called fascinating because it is weird.

  4. Before joining this class, I had no idea what a contemporary literature sounded like. And I would be lying if I said that I totally understand it now but I think I got some characteristics of this type of literature. Contemporary literature is in my opinion, something out of ordinary; by this I don't mean it as the book being fiction or unreal with a lot of action but the style it's written in is something that you would not expect in standard and orthodox literature. I don't know how it is in English, but the Wind-up Bird that I read in Japanese, just reading it made me feel weird. The book has many long and odd sentences that might seem boring at first, but actually there is something attracting that makes people want to go on with the reading.

  5. Even though I do not like a book that is hard to understand for me.. I would rather read more creative book than normal typical canonical book. I am very interested in reading contemporary books because as I read it I can see how people are still creating their own ways to write a book.
